I hear people say they don't have time to cook for their birds and I understand. I'm busy, too. But, how long does it really take, is it worth the time and energy, and do I have to "cook" all the time?
You can buy vegetables and cook them for yourself and share good stuff with your birds. That takes almost no extra time. Remember that birds (not unlike kids) sometimes like the "package" better than the "present." Give them something they recognize as "food," and they'll often at least TRY the stuff. A whole organic cooked/or raw carrot, a whole tiny pear, or a whole flower of broccoli (nice and warm) can be such a great toy they might even eat some of it. Squash, pumpkin and the seeds from both of these are ultra good for your bird and easy to fix. Take out the seeds, bake the pumpkin or squash in the oven, and serve warm. If you smash the fruit so that is is like mashed potatoes and offer it to your bird with your hand, you might be surprised how they gulp it down. New foods, left in a dish, might get ignored. If your bird sees you trying some of it, even better!!! The seeds from pumpkins and squash can be baked on a tray in the oven. 325F for 30 minutes should do it. When they turn a light, toasty brown, they're ready. Cool and serve. Yummy.
We have certain cookable foods at Tree Top Bird Center we really like to serve our babies. We have found that Coco's Corn Bread helps our babies wean off the baby formula and develop good appetites for adult healthy foods. Ginger Snappy is a cookable mixture of grains, nuts, and fruit blended by Debbie herself for her birds. Prices on our products are able to be lower than "national brands" because we don't pay a middle man. We just get a mask, net, gloves, and clean area and mix, mix, mix. Our cookable foods are made with human grade ingredients, either natural or organic as we can find the stuff we want.
So, if you don't have time to make vegetables for you and your bird every day, that's okay. We have packages of things you can cook up in advance and serve as you need it. We carry national brands and we're making some of our own. Feel free to ask any of our staff about their favorite foods. They'll tell you honestly and they all have their favorites.
