Wow! What a cool evening at Tree Top Bird Center!

Practice came to Tree Top Bird Center on Sunday, August 15th and gave us a demonstration on well bird exams at the vet!
It was a great evening with lots of one-on-one with Dr. Osofsky. While Debbie held "Sophie," the one year old Harlequin Macaw, Dr. "O" went through the main steps that all birds go through to get an exam from the veterinarian. (Sophie squawked a little bit, but she recovered her composure rather nicely!) From ears and nares to privates "down under," Sophie got checked out and was deemed "healthy," although a normal exam in the vet's office would include blood work and a swab or two sent to the lab.
Dr. Osofsky answered lots of questions from the audience about general care and emergency situations and listed the other available avian veterinarians in the area.
Debbie, owner of Tree Top Bird Center, gave a presentation on birds foraging in their cages and showed a couple of You Tube Videos of birds foraging, like this one. (This lady has lots of videos on foraging and there are TONS like this at www.youtube.com . Just put in the search terms "foraging parrots" and you can watch for hours.) Tree Top Bird Center carries lots of toys for foraging opportunities for your birds, but my favorite that Debbie demonstrated was simply wrapping a nut in a coffee filter and giving it to Sophie, the macaw. She was so happy to find that "nut" in the unwrapped paper!
Dr. Osofsky is a young mother with two children, four and one. She comes from California, but (agreed with me!) that folks in Texas are very especially nice people! :> She practices at the Carrollton West Pet Hospital and also handles exotics like lizards and the like. We are hoping to have several articles from Dr. Osofsky to put up here on the web and that maybe, if we're very nice, she will come back to Tree Top Bird Center and give us another demonstration soon!
